Rate six of the UK’s best gluten free pizza places

Anyone who knows me knows I’m aways on the hunt for the best pizza and that means, a quality gluten free base. Gluten intolerant pizza lovers will understand that this is a hit or miss situation, which requires a little extra patience.

It’s extremely disappointing when you’re ready to drown yourself in this delicious piping hot Italian dish, for it to be a bit of a flop. Previously I’ve crowned my two favourite gluten free pizzas in New York, but now it’s all about the UK.

From cardboard thin bases, to delectable crispy dough that has you questioning whether the restaurant got your order wrong. Discover my best gluten free pizzas in the UK.

Domino’s

One of the nation’s favourite takeaways, Dominos. Unfortunately, not the gluten free portion of the nation as this base is a bit of a flop.

It’s perfectly fine if you’re ordering in bulk for the office or a big party and just need some grub. But the base is rock hard and your poor teeth have to struggle slightly. There’s also only a handful of toppings, making me think it’s not made fresh.

Aside from the texture, what’s more is you can only have it in a size small. It’s also not included in any of the meal deals, a huge draw point if ordering from Domino’s as all students and anyone who has ever had a hangover knows.

Pizza Express

The first gluten free pizza I ever had! A solid choice with a good selection of toppings at a classic family pizza restaurant.

One thing I will say is the gluten free dough balls are immense. Seriously you wouldn’t know the difference. They come with a creamy garlic butter and are not to be missed.

The base however whilst tasty, is very thin and a bit unfulfilling. I love a fluffy crust with a little bit of crunch, and this doesn’t provide that. But it definitely is a yummy choice and one to not be tossed aside.

Franco Manca

Only slightly better than Pizza Express in my opinion, Franco Manca gluten free pizza is a great date night meal. The restaurants themselves are a little more atmospheric, and the pizza base has a bit more crisp to it.

You do have to pay an extra £2 for the gluten free base, a bit disappointing but unfortunately not uncommon. The toppings and variety of choices however are delicious and the crust is fluffier than expected. Overall, I’d go back again and again.

Fatto a Mano

Gluten free pizza at Fatto a Mano, Brighton

Now we’re into the game changers. The pizzas that are truly doing what we need them to do. Fatto a Mano is doing it right. Originating in Brighton and now expanding throughout London, this traditional Neapolitan pizzeria is truly special when it comes to eating gluten free.

If you didn’t have a point of comparison, the gluten free base looks like a normal pizza. A crispy bubbly crust that melts in your mouth and isn’t soggy in the middle. The tomato base is top tier and the cheese distribution is spot on.

The only issues here are that it is extremely filling, if not a little stodgy. It’s a mission to finish and can be quite overwhelming. You also have to pay an additional £2 for the gf substitute. Otherwise, it’s quality. Don’t forget to get a side of the rosemary fries too!

Dough

Gluten free pizza at Dough, Bath

Dough pizzeria has five I repeat, FIVE different gluten free bases?! I know right….how fun. These are traditional sourdough, hemp, turmeric, purple corn and seaweed. I’ve tried all of these apart from the purple corn, and hemp was my personal favourite.

The taste is unreal, the crust is chewy and whilst it’s a little thin, this definitely doesn’t detract. This place seriously is all about the dough, and there are another seven choices for gluten eaters.

The absolute only downfall, is that the price of these bases ranges from £2.95 to a whopping £3.95…which seems a little extortionate when a margherita pizza is already £10.95. It is for this reason and this reason alone, that it falls in at 2nd.

Pizza Pilgrims

So coming in at number one, Pizza Pilgrims! A fun chain that doesn’t feel like one when you’re there, this is the go to place for gluten free pizza lovers.

Their fun interiors and quirky starters will deliver a fun experience, with a delectable variety of pizza toppings too. What’s more, is that the gluten free base comes at no extra charge.

A serious game changer when you’re eating pizza four or five times a month like myself. The crust is thick but light, fluffy but crispy and tastes great with one of their crust dippers in flavours pesto aioli, white truffle and nduja.

I seriously cannot recommend this one enough for the pizza lovers out there!
