Cambodia is not always at the top of everyone’s Asia list, but it should be. After visiting both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, I was sold. Everyone I have since met on my further travels who has also been has felt the same. What’s more, is it is also extremely easy to eat gluten free in Cambodia. Therefore, this is not a country to be missed.

Angkor Wat is a testament to the devotion and craftsmanship of the Khmer Empire, particularly at sunrise when the temple’s silhouette against the sky is a sight to behold. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a morning person, so dragging myself up at 4am was a mammoth task. But wow, was it worth it.

I was met with a canvas painted with hues of gold and rose. Even with some clouds in the sky, it was a beautiful experience as the sun rose gently into the sky announcing its arrival to everyone. I’d recommend staying up on the grassy hills where there’s less people, as this is a slightly better viewpoint.

Exploring Angkor Wat’s intricate corridors and ascending its ancient staircases, you’ll be transported through time, delving into stories etched in every stone and carving. This truly is a marvellous place that is unlike anything else I’ve ever been to.

Ta Prohm Temple: Where Mystique Meets Ruins

Venture deeper into Siem Reap’s enigma at Ta Prohm temple, an embodiment of nature’s embrace on man-made structures. The sight of massive tree roots intertwining with ancient walls evokes a sense of wonderment at the passage of time.

Famous for being one of the settings for the Tomb Raider film, this is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Siem Reap. Awaken your inner explorer as you navigate the incredible passageways. Every step shows you just how incredible nature really is. It’s a humbling reminder of the transience of human creations.

Butterfly Sanctuary: nature’s palette comes alive

You may have searched for attractions in TripAdvisor and thought, why is a butterfly sanctuary rated as the number one thing to in Siem Reap? Well I’m here to tell you there is good reason behind this.

Take a pause from the historical marvels and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Siem Reap at the Butterfly Sanctuary. This serene haven offers more than just a visual spectacle; it’s a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Cambodia’s delicate butterfly species. Wander through lush gardens as colourful butterflies flit around, creating a living tapestry of vibrancy.

Make sure you stop and ask questions as learning about this incredible place is where the true beauty lies. They closely monitor lava, cocoon, caterpillar and butterfly numbers as part of their conservation efforts. The variety of all of these is astounding, and we were lucky enough to be taken into the caterpillar house. Here we got to learn about the different processes and see some incredible caterpillars, from hairy to spiky to fluffy.

The butterflies are released into the wild, playing a key role in the area’s ecosystem. This is a space where you can reconnect with nature’s beauty and contribute to the conservation efforts.

Angkor Thom Temple: Unraveling Historical Enigmas

Travel back in time as you step into the grandeur of Angkor Thom, once the heart of the Khmer Empire. Passing through the South Gate, flanked by colossal stone faces, you’ll enter a world of intricately designed temples and mesmerising architecture.

The Bayon temple, with its enigmatic stone visages, is a highlight – a labyrinth of history and spirituality. The bas-reliefs adorning its walls recount stories of battles, daily life, and mythological tales. An intriguing way to unravel the layers of Cambodia’s past.

Chong Khneas Floating Village: Life on Cambodia’s waters

Undoubtedly one of my favourite things to do in Siem Reap. Experience the rhythm of life on Cambodia’s waterways with a visit to Chong Khneas Floating Village.

Engage with the everyday lives of the locals as you cruise through the floating houses, schools, and markets that rest upon Tonlé Sap Lake. This immersive journey offers insight into the resilient spirit of a community. Witness fishermen casting their nets and children rowing to school. An authentic glimpse into a way of life that defines the region.

If you’re lucky enough, you may even get a five minute shoulder massage on your boat journey. Joining us on our boat journey down the delta, an 11 year old boy was offering up these massages. Trying to earn some extra money for school books, our guide said the normal amount to give is two dollars but most of us gave at least five. A lovely way to relax whilst watching wilder beast graze on river banks.

Pub Street: A Culinary and Social Extravaganza

Pub streets and walking streets are a sure fixture of most places in Asia. They’re a great place to hang out after days of exploration, whether you want a quick bite, a massage or to let loose with a drink or two. Siem Reap’s pub street was no different.

It’s also easy to get to and from, as there were TukTuks everywhere charging just four dollars per journey. With a capacity of upto four people, this makes it an inexpensive night out if you’re travelling with a group.

Savour the vibrant energy of Siem Reap’s Pub Street, a melting pot of gastronomy, entertainment, and camaraderie. As the sun sets, the street comes alive with neon lights and the aroma of Khmer street food. Pub Street promises an unforgettable evening of cultural immersion and sensory delight.

Phare, the Cambodian Circus

Where storytelling and artistry meld in a breathtaking performance, last but not least is Phare, the Cambodian Circus is like no other. This troupe of talented artists weaves together theatre, dance, music, and circus arts to convey captivating narratives that celebrate Cambodia’s resilience and culture.
